Dear Member,

Your VR Men’s Golf Handicap is now being calculated using a simplified version of the new World Handicap System (WHS) that was implemented in January, 2020. It is derived from scorecards submitted from the courses we play and is generated from the tee box, the slope and rating as indicated on the scorecard
.
A description of the new WHS rules for calculating the index can be found here.

To keep life simple, we follow some of the new rules, but not all of them because to follow all of the new rules would make it practically impossible to calculate handicap indexes for our members and the impact on the handicap indexes values would be minimal.

Some of the key changes to the calculation protocol from the previous method are summarized below:

1) – The 8 best scores from your 20 most recent rounds will be used instead of the current 10.

2) - The 96% multiplier that existed in the old handicap system calculation will no longer be used.

3) – Only three rounds, or six nine-hole rounds will be required to create a Handicap Index instead of the old 5 round requirement

4) – There is a new maximum index is 54.0 instead of what was 36.4.

We have a current local rule that says for daily play, the highest score you can get on a hole is 3 over par. We will continue to use this rule to speed up play and the only time this rule will not be in effect is if we are playing in a tournament when the 2 times par rule is in effect. We calculate new indexes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we will continue to follow our current practice of publishing updated indexes twice a month on the 15th and the last day of the month.

Thanks and enjoy - Alan Etkind, Handicaps
